Independent awards
The Atlas Awards
Three tiers: Atlas One, Atlas Two and Atlas Three. Awards recognise cooking only, judged by inspectors who pay for their meals. No restaurant can buy, request or lobby for one.
✦
Atlas One
Excellent cooking: precise, generous Kerala food worth a detour on any trip to the city.
✦✦
Atlas Two
Outstanding cuisine: a kitchen with a clear voice and technique that rewards a special journey.
✦✦✦
Atlas Three
A destination: Kerala cooking of rare distinction, worth planning travel around.
Winners
No edition has been published yet, and no restaurant currently holds an award. Every listing shows “not yet evaluated” until inspections have taken place. When the first edition is published, its winners, inspection period and any changes to the criteria will appear here.
How restaurants are judged
- Eligibility. Any listed restaurant with a genuine Kerala offering can be considered. Nominations from the public or owners are welcome but carry no weight in the decision.
- Anonymous visits. Inspectors book and dine like any guest and pay the full bill. Comped meals disqualify the visit.
- Conflict-of-interest check. Before submitting, the inspector declares any personal, family, financial or professional relationship with the restaurant. A declared conflict removes them from that evaluation. The system will not accept a submission without this declaration.
- Scored evaluation. Each visit is scored 0–10 against the criteria below, with written notes and the visit date. Atlas Two and Atlas Three require at least two visits by different inspectors.
- Editorial review. An editor who did not inspect the restaurant reviews the notes and scores, and approves or rejects the recommendation. The award is recorded only from an approved evaluation, and every step is kept in an audit log.
- Publication. Awards are published once a year as a named edition, with a short citation explaining the decision.
What we never do
- Award on the basis of public ratings, popularity, social media, AI-generated assessments or any payment.
- Accept money, free meals, gifts or travel from restaurants we assess.
- Let advertising influence awards. Any paid placement is labelled “Sponsored” and is handled by people who have no role in inspections.
- Claim an inspection took place when it did not.
Community Choice
If we run a public vote, it will be a separate, clearly named Community Choice recognition. It is never combined with, and never substitutes for, inspector judgements.
Withdrawals, appeals and corrections
An award can be withdrawn if a restaurant closes, changes kitchen leadership substantially, or if a later inspection finds standards have fallen. Withdrawals are shown on the restaurant’s page with the reason. Restaurants may ask for a factual error in a citation to be corrected through our corrections page; requests to change a judgement are reviewed by an editor not involved in the original decision, but award decisions are not negotiated.
